Horakuji Temple (Official Name: Horakuji Temple, Shikonzan Komatsuin, The head temple of the Sennyuji division of the Shingon sect)
Founded in 1178 by the son of Taira no Kiyomori. Known as the temple in which, during the Edo period (18th century), high priest Jiun entered to begin his training to become a priest.
Founded in 1178 by Taira no Shigemori, the son of historical leader Taira no Kiyomori. It is said that Shigemori built the temple as a site to install the statue of the Nyoirin Kannon bodhisattva his enemies had held. The same stories hold that he venerated the spirits of all those who had fallen in battle with it, regardless of which side they had fought on.The temple was burned to the ground in 1571 by Nobunaga Oda's forces, only to be restored soon after thanks to the commissioning of a hall for the Oda clan on the site. The historical figure Jiun (1718 - 1804) entered this temple as an initiate at age 13, only to go on to become a high priest, scholar of Sanskrit, and spiritual leader. The temple is also home to a memorial hall that holds works by Japan Art Academy-decorated author Kiseki Kosaka.
