Hyōtanyama Inari Shrine

One of Japan's three great Inari shrines, the shrine is built on the double-circular burial mound of Hyōtanyama Kofun. It is also famous as the head shrine of Tsujiura, a rare fortune-telling method in the country. It enshrines Ukemochi no Okami, who is in charge of business prosperity, good relationships, and general well-being.

The shrine is built on the gourd-shaped double-circle burial mound of Hyotanyama Kofun, and is one of Japan's three great Inari shrines, dedicated to Ukemochi-no-Okami. It is also famous as the head shrine of Tsujiura, a rare form of fortune-telling in Japan. Known as the "Love Fortune-telling," the shrine offers three types of fortune-telling: Tsujiura Hanja, where fortunes are read by observing passersby; Tsujiura Omikuji, three types of fortune-telling slips that use fire; and Tsujiura Hyotan Bamboo, which is also the origin of fortune cookies. According to the shrine's legend, the origins date back to 1583, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi built Osaka Castle, and enshrined Fukube Inari, a guardian deity, in a sacred place three ri away in the auspicious direction of Tatsumi, and enshrined it together with a golden gourd. The enshrined deity, Ukemochi-no-Okami, is a god who protects and helps the lives of all people, not only bringing prosperity to business but also an abundance of food and life in general. The grounds also house Sugawara Shrine, the god of learning, and other gods who bring various benefits, and various prayers are held, including for naming newborns and companies, and for easy childbirth and child-bearing.
