Located upstream of the Milky Way River, which flows north and south through Katano City in northeastern Osaka Prefecture, this shrine enshrines the giant boat-shaped rock "Amenoiwafune," a 12-meter-tall, 12-meter-wide boulder. Legend has it that Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the ancestor of the Mononobe clan, descended aboard the rock boat, and the location of the rock boat is said to be the sacred site where the god descended. During the construction of Osaka Castle, Kato Kiyomasa attempted to remove the boulder, but was unsuccessful. He carved the name "Kato Higonokami Kiyomasa" on the rock and abandoned the attempt. On a boulder next to the sacred object, four Buddhist statues—Dainichi Nyorai, Kannon Bodhisattva, Jizo Bodhisattva, and Seishi Bodhisattva—are carved facing the Milky Way. Known since ancient times as a training ground for Shintoists and Shugendo practitioners, the shrine also offers a "Cave Tour" into the caverns beneath the boulder, which is open to the public.
