Toyasu Bridge

This bridge was built over the Tosabori River by Yodoya Tsuneyasu, a lumber merchant in the Edo period.

This bridge spans the Tosabori River, connecting Osaka's Kita and Nishi Wards. Yodoya Tsuneyasu used his own funds to build the bridge, but it's said that originally there was a "Tanabeya Bridge" at the same location. Yodoya's main residence was in Okawa-cho (now Chuo Ward), but he dedicated himself to the development of Nakanoshima and was known as Japan's wealthiest lumber merchant in the late 17th century. The area from Nakanoshima 4-chome to 6-chome was originally called Tsuneyasu-cho, and was developed by Yodoya Tsuneyasu. During the Edo period, the area was lined with storehouses, and merchants built their own bridges to transport goods. During the first urban planning project, which began in 1921, a three-span, 11.4-meter-wide Gerber-style steel girder bridge was erected, transforming the bridge into a modern structure. After the war, a new, more stable, steel-girder bridge of roughly the same width was built downstream, remaining in place to this day.
