Keizaien Garden

This traditional Japanese garden with a strolling garden and ponds was created in the Taisho era as the main residence of the Sumitomo family, a wealthy merchant family in Osaka. It is a designated cultural property of Osaka City.

Located within Tennoji Park is a purely Japanese-style strolling garden with a forest and spring pond.
In 1926, Yoshizaemon Sumitomo (pen name Shunsui), the 15th head of the Sumitomo family, a wealthy merchant in Osaka since the Edo period, transferred the property to Osaka City.
It was donated along with the main house.
The large pond with an island floating in it is the center of the park, and artificial hills are built on three sides, creating a varied topography.
The surrounding area is lined with garden paths, stepping stones, and bridges, and is also equipped with a teahouse and gazebo.
The garden was designed and constructed by Ogawa Jihei, also known as "Ueji." From the mid-Meiji period to the early Showa period, he designed and constructed the gardens of Kinmochi Saionji's residence in Tokyo, the Heian Shrine Gardens,
A landscape architect who worked on large-scale gardens such as Maruyama Park and is credited with establishing the style of modern landscaping.
The garden was originally named "Keizawa-en" by Shunsui, with the intention of "the blessings of the shining age and the abundance of our ancestors."
Upon completion, the garden was renamed "Keizakuen."
The main building of the Osaka Municipal Museum of Fine Arts can be seen from the back of the garden towards the entrance.
It is built on the site of the Sumitomo family's main residence, which was donated around the same time.
