Mount Kongo Katsuragi Shrine

It is built on Mount Kongo, a treasure trove of nature.
In 665 (the 4th year of Emperor Tenchi's reign), approximately 1,300 years ago, En no Gyoja felt a spiritual energy at Mount Kongo at the age of 16, and after a long period of training, he built Kongosan Tenpōrin-ji Temple on the summit of Mount Kongo. At that time, he also enshrined Katsuragi Shrine, which enshrines his own ancestral deity, Hitokotonushi no Okami, as the guardian deity, and this is said to have marked the beginning of Mount Kongo being a sacred mountain where Shinto and Buddhism are intertwined.
