Kotokuji Temple

This historic temple is the origin of the name of the place, Karataobata, and is a temple of the Otani branch of Shinshu Buddhism, with Amida Buddha as its principal image.

In 988 (Eien 2) during the Heian period, the 64th Emperor Enyu ordered the monk Hoen of Enryaku-ji Temple to establish the Toguzan Shoyoho-ji Temple, a temple of imperial prayer. However, it was burned down during the Battle of Nanto Hokurei, leaving only the Karindo Hall. Later, Shunen, a monk from Onjo-ji Temple (also known as Mii-dera), visited the site and worshiped the Amida Buddha, the principal image of the temple. In 1228 (Antei 2), under the imperial decree of the 86th Emperor Gohorikawa, the temple was rebuilt and given the imperial title of Shoyozan Kotoku-ji Temple. Shunen then entered the Senshu Nembutsu sect and became a disciple of Saint Shinran, earning the name Butsunenbo Shinjo. The current main hall is approximately 250 years old, and the mountain gate is approximately 270 years old. The place name Karindo Obata is said to derive from the Karindo Hall.
