Kuchinawazaka

Discover the history of Osaka on the slopes of Uemachi Plateau, with temples and shrines where our ancestors rest in peace and stone monuments to writers who loved Osaka.

The seven slopes in Tennoji Ward, Osaka City—Shingonzaka, Genshojizaka, Kuchinawazaka, Aizenzaka, Kiyomizuzaka, Tenjinzaka, and Osaka—are collectively known as the "Seven Hills of Tennoji." Kuchinawazaka, a quiet, cobblestone slope running from Taiheiji Temple to Matsuyamachi-suji, is said to have been named after its undulating shape, resembling a snake when viewed from the bottom, or because it was here that rope weaving began during the construction of Osaka Castle. At the top of the slope stands a monument inscribed with a passage from "Ki no Miyako" (The City of Trees) by author Oda Sakunosuke. Nearby, Joshunji Temple is home to the graves of astronomy scholar Asada Goryu and painter Tanomura Chikuden, while Taiheiji Temple is home to the graves of physician Kitayama Juan, among other prominent figures of the Edo period. Furthermore, a memorial tower for Basho is located at Umekyuin Temple.
