Former Kuroda Domain Storehouse Nagayamon Gate

This is the front gate of the Kuroda clan's storehouse from the Edo period, which was located in what is now Nakanoshima, and is a tangible cultural property of Osaka Prefecture.
During the Edo period, Osaka was known as the "Kitchen of the Nation" and was the center of commerce, distribution, and finance in Japan. Products from various regions were gathered in Osaka, sold there, and then transported back to other regions or exported to foreign countries via Nagasaki. Various feudal domains established storehouses (houses used for storage and trading) along the Dojima River, Tosabori River, and Edobori River in what is now Nakanoshima. Storehouses began to increase during the Genroku period (1688-1705), reaching 124 by the Tenpo era (1830-1844). By the time the feudal domains were abolished and prefectures were established in 1916, there were 135. The front gate of the former Kuroda Domain (Fukuoka Domain) storehouse is one of the few remaining remains of a storehouse from the mid-Edo period, located near the current Nakanoshima Mitsui Building. In 1933, when the building was constructed, the Mitsui Company donated it to the city of Osaka, and it is currently preserved in Tennoji Park, on the south side of the Osaka Municipal Museum of Fine Arts (a tangible cultural property of Osaka Prefecture).
