Maishima Plant–the Osaka City, Yao City, and Mastubara City Environmental Partnership Facility

Recognizable for its colorful, eye-catching exterior, this state-of-the-art waste disposal facility is also open for free tours that’ll have you thinking about environment preservation and what it means to coexist with nature.

Basic information

Combining a garbage incineration facility and bulk waste crushing facility, this waste disposal facility is managed in partnership between Osaka City, Yao City, and Matsubara City, providing free tours with advance booking. Novel, colorful, and immediately recognizable, the design of the building comes from Friedensreich Hundertwasser, famed Vienna-borne artist and architect of environment preservation. Foliage spreads across the roof, around the windows, and through the periphery, creating a green landscape that completely encompasses the building. Planning is currently underway to plant a forest in the area around the building, enveloping it in green. Additionally, preparations are being made to establish fruiting trees and a biotope pond to function as habitats for birds and insects. Visitors come from near and far to learn about the functions and processes of this ecologically-minded state-of-the-art pollution prevention facility.
