Maishima Sports Island (Maishima Urban Auto Village/Barbecue Garden)

On the Maishima Sports Island, visitors can enjoy not only tennis, baseball, auto camping and barbecuing, but also making pottery like "Naniwazu-yaki," Osaka's new specialty.

Basic information

A 35-minute bus ride from JR Nishi-kujo Station takes you to Maishima Island, a man-made island in Osaka Bay located across the Konohana Bridge. The extensive island has a wide variety of sports facilities, such as a football training ground, which is used by the professional football team Cerreso Osaka, the indoor athletic field Maishima Arena, a baseball stadium, and the tennis center Seaside Tennis Garden. Next to those facilities are Lodge Maishima (a popular accommodation that also offers meeting facilities), an auto camp site and a barbecue garden. In addition, the island has good places to enjoy nature, including Shin-Yuhigaoka (which is popular as a top sunset viewing spot), Maihama Shore (where sea breezes and waves create relaxing sounds) and the Seaside Promenade. Maishima Pottery Village, also on the island, is a pottery center for making Naniwazu-Yaki, equipped with a climbing kiln, the only kiln of this kind in Osaka City. The pottery village offers 2-hour hands-on classes in hand-formed pottery, as well as workshops for beginners and those hoping to become professional potters.
