Meiji Bridge

This was the fourth bridge built from upstream of the former Tatsumichi Hori River. A monument now stands here.

This bridge was built in 1876, the fourth bridge from upstream over the former Itachibori River. Its name comes from the fact that it was completed during the Meiji period. In 1927, it was rebuilt as a steel girder bridge, with bronze lantern-shaped lights rising from granite pillars. The railings were decorated with a bracken pattern on a Miotsushi (Japanese azalea) pattern, an unusual design for the time. The bridge disappeared in 1956 when the Tachibori River was filled in, but to commemorate the development of the area that resulted from the bridge's opening, the name "Meiji" has been passed down to the local community and is still used as the name of the local elementary school. A monument now stands where the bridge once stood.
