Mizumadera Temple

This ancient temple is widely known as the Kannon Bodhisattva of Mercy. Founded by Gyoki, it is also famous as the fourth temple of the New Saigoku Pilgrimage. It is the 12th temple of the Shinto and Buddhist Pilgrimage in Osaka, and the 26th temple of the Izumi Saigoku Pilgrimage.
It is said that Gyoki founded the temple in 744 (Tenpyo 16) at the request of Emperor Shomu. At its peak, it boasted a large temple complex with seven halls and over 130 monks' quarters. It was burned down in 1585 (Tensho 13) during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's war, and the current main hall was rebuilt in 1811 (Bunka 8). The principal image of the temple is deeply revered as the "Kannon Bodhisattva of Mercy, who wards off evil spirits." The traditional "Senbon Mochitsuki" event began when Gyoki, led by 16 children, pounded rice cakes with wooden sticks to the tune of a song and offered them to the principal image, celebrating the appearance of the principal image of Kannon, and has been passed down to the present day.
