Moriguchi History Museum "Former Nakanishi Family Residence"

Moriguchi History Museum "Former Nakanishi Family Residence" hosts traditional cultural events throughout the year. Please come and see the stately architectural beauty of this Japanese house, its gardens, and traditional culture.

The Nakanishi family, one of Kawachi's most prestigious families, later served as the Owari Domain's Tenmangu Oyashiki Magistrate, due in part to their marriage with the Owari Tokugawa family in the early modern period. They are believed to have settled here in the mid-16th century, with the main house constructed in 1555. The current building was rebuilt in 1793, with the Nagayamon (large gate) rebuilt in 1776. The Nagayamon (large gate) faces east, while the main house, with its square-shaped entrance hall and pedestal, faces south. A separate shoin-zashiki room and living quarters are connected to the main house. In 1997, the tea room, inner gate with waiting area, and kamaya (sleeping quarters) were restored based on family feng shui (physiognomy) and other sources. The property was once surrounded by a moat, and the northern portion, now a park, was lined with storehouses. Although the layout of the main house is not significantly different from that of village headman buildings, it still displays the structure of a samurai residence, with a large entrance and a porch with a dais. It is said that there are no other examples of this type remaining in the prefecture, making it an extremely valuable relic of a local samurai residence. On February 18, 1998, it was designated as Moriguchi City's Tangible Cultural Property "Building No. 1," and opened as the Moriguchi History Museum to preserve this valuable cultural property and pass it on to future generations.
