Uotsuri-en Gogan (Osaka City Nanko Uotsuri-en Fishing Garden)
In order to have residents come to love the ocean waters and ports of Osaka, the wave breaker seawall at the western end of Nanko’s southern wharf was transformed into a fishing spot, making it Osaka Prefecture’s only fishing park. The seawall is 612 meters long and 12.5 meters wide (including the walkway); in total, around 400 people can fish along the 300m² area. Fish caught here include Japanese rockfish, false kelpfish, and fat greenling in spring; horse mackerel, mackerel, sardine, spotted sardine, and blackhead sea bream in summer; horse mackerel, mackerel, sardine, fat greenling, righteye flounder, and blackhead seabream in fall; and young Japanese sea bass, righteye flounder, Japanese rockfish, and fat greenling in winter. On Sundays and holidays when families head out to the park, members of the Fishing Culture Association go around and offer fishing guidance; on Saturdays from 4 p.m. onwards, it’s top-class sea bass fishers (with fishing instruction credentials) who make the rounds. There are also workshops held that teach attendees lure fishing for easy-to-catch species like sea bass and largehead hairtail. Attendance is free of charge.
