Nozaki Kannon Temple

The closest temple from Osaka for sutra copying and practice of Zen at the “Nozaki Mairi” festival.

A temple of the Soto school to practice Zen that worships the Eleven-Faced Kannon (mid-Heian period) as its main deity. Opened by Gyoki bodhisattva, a Buddhist priest, it has attracted the faith of the people of Osaka since ancient times. The main statue is a carved statue made of a single sandalwood, which is 130 cm in height. It stands on top of the pedestal while surrounded by a dragon. It is also famous nationwide as a setting for Joururi Japanese ballad dramas, Kabuki theater and Rakugo comedy, as well as in popular songs such as the “Nozaki Kouta” by Tokai Rintarou during the early Showa era. The gates are always open for anyone to enter and come worship the Kannon deity. Located on the eastern mountain skirt of the Osaka Plains, you can overlook the entirety of the city.
