Nozato Sumiyoshi Shrine

This shrine is said to have been founded by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu.
This shrine is said to have been founded by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1382. The town of Nozato is an ancient village established along the right bank of the old Nakatsugawa River (now the Nishiyodogawa River) following the excavation of the new Yodogawa River at the end of the Meiji era. The shrine is known for its unusual ritual, "Ichiyakanyo" (One Night Court Lady), a prefectural intangible cultural asset. Since ancient times, Nozato village has suffered repeated natural disasters and epidemics, so every year on January 20th of the lunar calendar, the villagers perform a ritual to offer a young girl to the gods. Seven years later, a samurai passing through the village volunteered to exterminate the victim, pretending to sacrifice a human in place of the young girl. The next morning, the samurai was gone, but following a trail of blood revealed a large dead baboon. This is the story of "Iwami Jutaro's Baboon Extermination," a well-known story told in storytelling. On February 20th, when the current festival is held, seven girls selected from the parishioners proceed to the altar with seven beautifully decorated buckets of offerings to present to the gods. Some of the tools used have ink inscriptions from 1702 (Genroku 15), confirming that this is an ancient ritual. Additionally, on the east side of the temple grounds, there are remains of a dike from the end of the Meiji period.
