Oimatsu Street

Stretching roughly 1km across Nishitenma from east to west, this street is lined with approximately 90 stores, including antique art dealers and art galleries. Originally developed as the main approach to Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, it was known as a district of learning and culture thanks to the presence of figures such as Oshio Heihachiro, a police officer who studied Yangmingism while serving in the early modern period, and Nishiyama Soin, a renga and haiku poet whose disciples included Ihara Saikaku and Konishi Raizan. During the Taisho era, inns, restaurants, and movie theaters were built along the street, and the number of antique art shops began to increase after the war. With the courthouse and Ministry of Justice building located to the south, the area is also home to many lawyers and judicial scrivener offices, giving the area a somewhat academic atmosphere. Antique festivals are held on the street every spring and fall. During the summer Tenjin Festival, a parade of people dressed in period costumes passes through Oimatsucho, filling the surrounding area with people.
