Ojoin Rokumanji Temple

Since the Heian period, the temple has flourished as a devout temple of Pure Land Buddhism, where people would watch the setting sun and practice Nissokan meditation, vowing to go to paradise. It is also home to the grave of Kusunoki Masatsura, who lived during the Nanboku-cho period.
According to the "Shui Ojoden," a chronicle from the late Heian period, Ojoin Temple was founded by the Nembutsu saint Ansuke, who visited the temple in a dream when the founder, Lord Kawase Yoshimatsu, had a temple built on the site of the dilapidated Rokumanji Temple. Ansuke believed that "the east gate of Tennoji Temple is the center of the east gate of the Pure Land, and from the west you can also see the clear sunsets," and practiced the five remembrance gates daily while gazing at the sunset, achieving his aspirations for rebirth in paradise. Since then, Ojoin Temple has flourished, attracting the faith of those praying for rebirth in paradise. Ojoin Temple also has a deep connection with Lord Kusunoki Masayuki, the eldest son of Lord Kusunoki Masashige, who fought on the side of the Southern Court during the Northern and Southern Courts period. Ojoin Temple was the headquarters for Masayuki's final battle, the Battle of Shijo Nawate, and the tomb where he died remains enshrined to this day.
