The history of Ono Shrine dates back to before Christ, and it is also known as Otakebi no Miya. It is said that it began when the spirit of Itsuse no Mikoto was enshrined at Hamamiya. It was then moved to its current location in 859(the first year of the Jogan era). The shrine was formerly listed in the Engishiki, and the area around the nearby Futagoike Pond is home to the Otokozato ruins, suggesting that people once lived over a fairly wide area. Hamamiya is currently a subsidiary shrine of Ono Shrine.
