Also known as Otakebinomiya (the palace of roars), Ono Shrine's history stretches back more than two thousand years. The shrine is believed to have been established in the Hamamiya area with the enshrinement of Itsuse no Mikoto and the spirit of the first emperor. Ono Shrine moved to its current location in 859 and can be found listed in the historic Engishiki records. The Onosato Ruins can be found nearby, centered around Futago Pond, leading experts to believe the area was widely settled. Hamamiya Shrine is currently an auxiliary shrine of Ono Shrine.
