A wealthy farming family, the Yamaguchis passed the title of “headman” down the generations, governing the local area. They were influential enough to earn an official surname, as well: “Echizenya.” The residence was destroyed by fire during the Summer Campaign of the Siege of Osaka (1615), but was rebuilt soon after and remains one of the few wooden townhouses surviving from 17th-century Japan. The dozo-style mortar storehouse is enveloped by the branches of a centuries-old Japanese wax tree, engendering a stately and dignified atmosphere along this quiet residential street.
