Saidera Temple
Saidera is a historic temple founded by the renowned priest Gyoki.
Given that Saidera Temple's bell tower shows architecture from the early Edo period, scholars believe the temple was founded at the same time its bells were crafted. It is also the second oldest of the early modern bell towers still standing in Osaka today. The temple's Yakushido hall conducts a procedure to address the evil spirits and gods of pestilence that cause diseases, sealing them away in cucumbers via the "Kyuri Kaji" blessing. This is conducted on the Day of the Ox (annually by lunar calendar). The Sai no Kiyomizu or "pure spring of Sai" waters that flow before the main hall doorway are said to be drawn from a holy spring called forth by Gyoki's prayers. With ties to worship of the Yakushi Nyorai Buddha of medicine at the Yakushido hall, the waters have inspired faith in their ability to cure illnesses and particularly ailments of the eyes.
