Sayama Pond

A flood control dam with a history of over 1,400 years, covering an area of approximately 400,000 square meters.
Sayamaike Pond has a long history. Research conducted during the Heisei era's renovations revealed that it was constructed approximately 1,400 years ago, around 616. It is an artificial pond, built to provide water for agricultural use. Its circumference is 3.4 kilometers, and its area is approximately 400,000 square meters. The pond's current appearance is the result of the wisdom and ingenuity of each era. Records show that Gyoki repaired it in 731 (Tenpyo 3). Later, during the Kamakura period, it was renovated by Chogen, and during the Edo period, it underwent extensive restoration by Katagiri Katsumoto. In modern times, the pond has undergone major renovations by Osaka Prefecture from 1926 (Taisho 15) to 1931 (Showa 6) and from 1988 (Showa 63) to 2002 (Heisei 14). The Sayamaike Museum opened on March 28, 2001 (Heisei 13). A friendly environment has been created where visitors can learn more about the history of Sayama Pond.
