Shibagaki Shrine

Located within the ancient Matsubara Manor, this is the former imperial palace of Emperor Hanzei, the 18th emperor of the Yamato government, and was the last capital of the Kawachi dynasty, which ruled here for five years.

Located roughly midway between the Otsu Road (Nagao Kaido) and the Tanbi Road (Takeuchi Kaido), this ancient Matsubara Manor was the site of the imperial palace of Emperor Hanzei, the 18th emperor of the Yamato dynasty. He established his capital here for five years, becoming the final capital of the Kawachi dynasty. The "Kojiki" and "Nihon Shoki" (Chronicles of Japan) record the Tanbi-shiba Imperial Villa as the main palace. His reign was marked by peace and prosperity, with bountiful harvests and prosperous people. The names of the various palaces, including Gokudenyama, Daimon, Nakamon, Gakudo, Wakamiya, Hanseiyama, Togu, Dokyo, Nakahashi, and Takami, remain. The area has been designated a historic site by Osaka Prefecture, and is now a designated site for buried cultural assets. Ihara Saikaku, famous for his Edo-period ukiyo-zoshi (fictionalized stories), also visited the shrine grounds, leaving behind numerous kyoka poems about the shrine, and a monument bearing his poem stands within the grounds.
