This is the site of Japan's first Koshin-son appearance, and the principal image is Shomen Kongo-doji (a hidden Buddha). On Koshin Day, January 7th, 701, Gohan Sozu prayed to the heavens to save the many people suffering from an epidemic. A young boy appeared as a messenger of Taishakuten and demonstrated the miraculous power of warding off disaster and preventing illness. For the past 1,300 years, the temple has been revered as a place where prayers to the principal image on Koshin Day or the day before (Yoi Koshin) are guaranteed to be granted. The first Koshin is the most grand, with a Daihannya Tendokukai (Great Prajnaparamita Reading) held the day before and a Sedo Daigoma (Great Homa) on the day itself. During the Koshin festival, the temple grounds are bustling with stalls selling items such as "Kitamuki Konnyaku" (Konnyaku Sticks). It is said that if you receive the blessings of the Three Monkeys Hall, which are said to "overcome illness" and "drive away evil spirits," any pain will be instantly cured.
