Shounji Temple

This temple has a beautiful dry landscape garden with white sand arranged like flowing water, and is particularly worth seeing in the spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, making it a place where you can spend some time in peace and tranquility.
The temple was founded during the Kan'ei era (1624-1643) by wealthy merchant Tani Shoan and Takuan Soho as its founding priest. Its mountain name, Ryukokuzan Shounji, and commonly known as the Pine Temple, were reduced to ashes by multiple air raids. Its beginnings were marked by the entry of Master Sato Ikko in 1946. A portrait of Takuan at the age of 67, painted at the request of Tani Shoan (a national important cultural property), and the Shaka Seimonzo statue (a national important cultural property) remain on display at the museum. The grounds also feature a dry landscape garden, designated a Place of Scenic Beauty by Osaka Prefecture, set against a stonework wall and featuring Edo-period style. During the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament, the temple is bustling with visitors, with the Dewanoumi stable staying at the Shounji Kaikan hall.
