Sugawara Shrine

It is affectionately known as "Sakai's Tenjin-san." This shrine enshrines one of the Seven Tenjin, which is said to have been created by Sugawara no Michizane himself after being demoted to Dazaifu, then released into the sea and washed up on the shore of Sakai Port.
This shrine enshrines one of the Seven Heavenly Gods, a deity believed to have been created by Sugawara no Michizane after his demotion to Dazaifu, then released into the sea and washed up on the shores of Sakai Port. It is said to have been built in 997. The shrine currently houses the main hall, which enshrines the deity; the Niomon Gate (a designated tangible cultural property of Osaka Prefecture), donated by Sakai gunsmith Enokamiya Kanzaemon in 1677; and the Kobaiken teahouse, built in the early Edo period. The grounds also include Sakai Ebisu Shrine, beloved as the premier Ebisu shrine in southern Osaka. Every January, hundreds of thousands of people visit the shrine to pray for business prosperity. The grounds also include Japan's oldest Yakuso Shrine, which has recently become known for its ability to ward off cancer. The shrine's gardens are also home to a two-day firefly viewing event held in mid-June, attracting large crowds.
