Located among the buildings of Doshomachi, known as the "town of medicine," this shrine is known as the god of health and medicine. It enshrines Sukunahikona-no-mikoto, the Japanese god of medicine, and Shinno-en-tei, the Chinese god of medicine, and is also known as "Shinnō-san." It is said to have originated in 1780, when druggists enshrined a branch of Sukunahikona-no-mikoto from Kyoto's Gojō Tenjin Shrine, along with Shinno, who had previously been enshrined at the Nakamakaisho in Doshomachi. The "Paper Tiger," a popular Osaka souvenir, is a talisman for protection from illness at this shrine. During a cholera epidemic in Osaka in 1822, a pill called "Toratousaki-o-kouen" (Tiger Head Killing Demon Yellow Wheat) was created to ward off the disease. It was distributed free of charge along with the paper tiger talisman, offering prayers for protection, and it is said that the illness was cured. The Shinno Festival is held every year on November 22nd and 23rd, and paper tigers are distributed. The Doshomachi Medicine Museum is also located within the shrine grounds.
