Toko-in Temple of Hagi

A sacred place with a long history of bush clover blooming for 1,300 years. It is the 12th sacred site of the new Saigoku region, the first sacred site of the Saigoku Seven Gods of Fortune, a temple associated with Gyoki Bodhisattva, the former Osaka (Kawasaki) Toshogu Shrine, one of the 100 best green spaces in Osaka, and one of the 100 best views of Toyonaka (the former Toyonaka Five Views).

This temple is said to be the sacred site of Japan's first public cremation, established by Gyoki in 735 (Tenpyo 7). It enshrines the Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha), a secret Buddhist statue carved by Gyoki himself, as its principal image. Gyoki planted and cared for the auspicious bush clover (hagi) for approximately 1,300 years, and the temple has been affectionately known as the "Hagi Temple" since ancient times. Even today, approximately 3,000 bush clover flowers bloom every autumn, and the "Hagi Festival Doryo Festival" is held. The temple, which inherited the former Toshogu Shrine in Osaka, enshrines many principal images, including the Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha) donated by Tokugawa Ieyasu's eldest daughter, Princess Kame, the Doryo Daigongen (Doryo Daigongen), a statue commissioned by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Koyori Eleven-Headed Kannon (Eleven-Headed Bodhisattva), Emperor Godaigo's personal Buddha, and the Jigoku-Jizo (Jizo without a Chin) statue, which originated from Oki Island. The temple is lined with stone monuments bearing haiku by haiku poets such as Masaoka Shiki and Takahama Kyoshi, attracting many literary figures and artists. The Hagi Roen Garden, named by Kitaoji Rosanjin, has been selected as one of Osaka's 100 best green spaces.
