Tokoin Haginotera Temple
An eternal holy site with over 1,300 years of history where Japanese clover blooms. Also selected as an entry in the 100 Views of Osaka Greenery. It is holy site 12 on the new Western Japan pilgrimage, and holy site one on the Western Japan Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage. The temple also has deep ties to the bodhisattva Gyoki.
It is believed that Tokoin Haginotera Temple is the holy site at which the priest Gyoki conducted Japan's first cremations for commoners. The temple reveres a statue of Yakushi Nyorai erected by Gyoki as its principal object of worship, although it is not normally viewable by the public. The temple also cultivates around 1,300 Japanese clover or hagi flowers, the flower of mourning, on its grounds, and has been known by the nickname "Haginotera" (the Japanese clover temple) since ancient times. Even now, roughly 3,000 flowers bloom every autumn when the "Hagi-matsuri Doryo-sai" festival is held. This is also a temple in the tradition of the Toshogu Shrine that once stood in Osaka. In addition to the principal Yakushi Nyorai statue venerated here, originally a gift from Ieyasu Tokugawa's eldest daughter, the temple venerates numerous other objects. Among them are a Doryo Daiongen bodhisattva statue dispatched from another temple by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, an eleven-faced Kannon statue sent by a child of Emperor Go-Daigo, a chinless statue of the bodhisattva Jizo from the Oki Islands, and more. The grounds also feature monuments bearing poetry from renowned haiku writers like Kyoshi Takahama and Masaoka Shiki among others, drawing countless visitors with literary interests. The Shuroen Garden on the premises was named by noted artist Kitaoji Rosanjin, and was selected as one of the 100 Views of Osaka Greenery.
