Although the date of its founding is unknown, it is a shrine with a long history, known as Miyayama or Aogakiyama, which has long been worshipped as a sacred mountain. Next to it is the Tendai sect's Kozenji temple, which was built by Jikaku Daishi (Ennin) in 852 (the second year of the Ninju era), and the shrine still retains strong traces of the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism that continued from ancient times until the Edo period. In 1574 (the second year of the Tensho era), the shrine was burned down during the wars of Oda Nobunaga, but was rebuilt along with Kozenji temple during the Genroku period of the Edo period. Every year on May 5th, a grand festival featuring a portable shrine is held.
