YASUI JINJA SHRINE

This ancient shrine enshrines Sukunahikona no Kami (the deity Sukunahikona), also known as Sugawara no Michizane. When Sugawara no Michizane was demoted to Dazaifu in 901, he stopped here for a rest on his way to visit his aunt, Kakujuni, who was at Domyo-ji Temple in Kawachi. At the time, villagers who sympathized with Michizane presented him with rice crackers, and in return, he received the Sugawara family crest, a plum blossom. This is said to have become the plum blossom that is still used as the trademark for "Awa Okoshi," a specialty of Osaka. Yasui Shrine was built by villagers in 942, the 5th year of Tenkei, to enshrine Michizane's spirit, after his death. Additionally, this area was also used by monks from Shitennoji Temple to spend their summer retreat (a period of retreat during the rainy season, when they refrain from going out and devote themselves to training at the temple), and so "Yasui" is said to have become "Ango." Within the temple grounds, there is the Kanshizume Well, one of the Seven Famous Springs of Tennoji, which is said to have been drunk by Michizane, as well as a monument to Sanada Yukimura, who was killed in battle by the Tokugawa side during the Summer Siege of Osaka.
