Springtime Osaka "National Treasure" Tour 2026 <Additional Location> Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts

In conjunction with the "Osaka Destination Campaign After Campaign," the "Spring Osaka 'National Treasure' Tour 2026" will be held from April to June 2026, featuring the public display and unveiling of 19 national treasures and 62 important cultural properties (former national treasures only) of art, crafts, and buildings at 24 locations throughout Osaka Prefecture.
At the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts, the national treasure "Konkomyōkyō Scroll No. 2" and the former national treasure "Picture of the Empress Leaving the Frontier" will be exhibited as part of the 90th anniversary special exhibition "Full Power! Tales of Masterpieces - Episodes of Beauty Traced with the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts."
Basic information
The Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts opened in May 1936 within Tennoji Park as Japan's third public art museum. After its first major renovation, it reopened in March 2025. It consists of the original main building [a nationally registered tangible cultural property] and the "underground exhibition room" which was newly established in 1992, and houses approximately 8,700 works, including national treasures.
The "Konkomyōkyō Kandai Ni" (Second Scroll of the Golden Light Sutra), a beautifully copied sutra, was written in 1192 as a memorial offering for Emperor Go-Shirakawa upon his death. It is believed that the paper used for this sutra was repurposed from an illustrated scroll that the emperor had been involved in creating during his lifetime, and beneath the sutra text are illustrations that appear to be narrative drawings [preliminary sketches before coloring]. It was designated a National Treasure in 2025.
"The Concubine of Ming's Departure from the Frontier" is a painting based on the story of Wang Zhaojun, one of the Four Great Beauties of China. Set during the reign of Emperor Yuan of the Western Han Dynasty, it depicts Wang Zhaojun, chosen from the imperial harem to become the wife of the Xiongnu king as part of a peace treaty, being sent to the frontier beyond the Great Wall. She is shown riding a horse and wearing clothing in the style of a foreign tribe.
