A field day researching the anime and iconic characters of Japan

The anime and characters created in Japan have picked up many fans both domestically and overseas. From the established classics to the newest hits, these franchises have been commercialized not only as comics and films, but as a rich variety of branded merchandise, too. In Osaka's Umeda, you'll find many stores stocked with popular anime and character products. From toys, stationery, and fashion goods to games, household items, and even snacks, your favorite character has been transformed into just about anything imaginable! Simply having a look around is fun enough: Who knows, you might even make some new discoveries. This is a place sure to immerse you, whether you're a kid or still a kid at heart.

    JUMP SHOP, UMEDA BRANCH

    Located in Osaka's Umeda, Jump Shop carries goods focusing on the recurring series from the wildly popular manga magazine, Weekly Shonen Jump. These includes series like One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Gin Tama, Reborn!, and more. The billboard-sized sign close to its entrance should serve as your landmark. Like something out of a fan's dream, the shop carries original Shueisha goods, anime goods, comics, DVDs, snacks, and even t-shirts. There are also lots of limited-edition products available only for purchase at Jump Shop branches. Without a doubt, this place will cast its spell over kids and adults alike.

  3. KIDDY LAND, UMEDA BRANCH

    Located on the first floor and first basement floor of Hankyu Sanbangai, Kiddy Land has a wide range of character goods popular with children and adults of all ages. Their selection ranges from the cute to the unique, with goods featuring characters like Hello Kitty, Miffy, Rilakkuma, Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Snoopy, Monchhichi (for those who are after a bit of nostalgia), Suzy’s Zoo and Carebears (the last two popular among young girls). Their products include stationery, fashion goods, plush dolls, interior decor, and snacks. With a massive selection of affordable items, you're sure to find yourself wanting to grab one of everything.

  4. DONGURI REPUBLIC, KIDDY LAND, UMEDA BRANCH

    My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke—many Ghibli films are highly acclaimed not just in Japan but across the globe, too. Here at Donguri Republic, you'll find a huge array of Ghibli character goods for sale. These items range from cute plush dolls and household goods to stationery. Even just window-shopping through the incredible selection here is loads of fun, and the wood décor is sure to soothe your heart. One of their featured products is Ghibli characters done as finger puppets (¥200/puppet). They're so cute you'll want to collect them all!

  5. RESTAURANT KARAOKE SHIDAX, UMEDA CHAYAMACHI CLUB

    Restaurant Karaoke Shidax is a famous karaoke chain featuring a full meal menu. One of their most popular options recently is the Yuttari Lunch (“relaxing lunch”), which lets you enjoy lunch in a private karaoke room (offered Monday to Friday, excluding national holidays). With no room charge for the first hour, you can get a lunch set that comes with a drink and dessert for only ¥580 yen! Their select menu features seven choices of Japanese, Western, or Chinese-style meals, including Hamburger Steak with Fried Egg and Veggie-filled Gomoku Udon With Okowa Steamed Rice Balls. Enjoy your time singing your favorite anime theme songs while having a filling lunch.

  6. POKÉMON CENTER OSAKA

    The Pokemon franchise has become a worldwide phenomenon, and the Pokémon Center is its official store. While selling a rich variety of original products, it's also host to various services and sales campaigns sure to satisfy any Pokémon fan. The shop carries cute plush dolls, figurines, household goods, stationery, and t-shirts. It also sell cards for the card game, books, and even CDs and DVDs—and of course, everything is Pokémon-themed. Limited edition original goods are available as well, so don’t miss the chance to catch 'em all!

  7. MANDARAKE, UMEDA BRANCH

    Pass the bright-red sign, take the escalator up to the third floor, and there you are—a mysterious space that'll make you feel as if you've wandered into a grotto. Mandarake is a spacious store that presents a gorgeous view packed to the brim with toys and figurines from various anime and tokusatsu series: All the best series are here, from the wildly popular One Piece to Neon Genesis Evangelion as well as nostalgic items from the Saint Seiya and Mobile Suit Gundam franchises. Delve through the shelves and find rare chogokin die-cast toys together with countless other treasures. On the second floor, manga ranging from the newest series to the timeless classics line the shelves, surrounding a massive enshrined replica of a fossilized mammoth skeleton. You might even come across some valuable "artifact" manga like works by Osamu Tezuka.

Sights to see
Two stations away from Umeda via the Midosuji Subway Line is Shinsaibashi, home to a specialty store for Sanrio characters called "Sanrio Gallery." It's like walking through a dream—for Sanrio goods, this store has it all, including limited edition items and rare collectibles that cannot be found at other Sanrio locations.
HUNGRY?
The second basement floor of Hankyu Sanbangai is a gourmet's paradise, lined with close to 100 places to dine and drink. From cafes to full-blown restaurants serving Japanese, Western, Chinese, and Italian cuisine, you're sure to find something to your liking.
