Mt. Daiho Hounzenji Temple (Hounji Temple)

This is an old Obaku (Zen) temple founded by Zen Master Egoku Domyo. In spring, azaleas bloom in abundance, and in summer, 1,000 lanterns are lit.
This Obaku sect temple was founded in 1672 by Zen Master Egoku Domyo, one of the three great masters of Obaku. The temple grounds, including the Sanmon Gate, Tennoden Hall, Daibutsuden Hall (Main Hall), Kaisan-do Hall, Yosen-den Hall, Hojo Hall, and bell tower, preserve the original architecture of the temple. The Daibutsuden Hall houses 1,111 statues of Shaka Nyorai, Yakushi Nyorai, and Amida Nyorai, totaling 3,333 statues, as principal images. At the annual Daisegaki Hoe and Manto-e ceremony held on August 15th, approximately 1,000 lanterns are lit, attracting many visitors. Around the end of April, Sakai City's flowering azaleas bloom across the 33,000-square-meter grounds, attracting approximately 1,000 visitors per day. It is also a temple on the Kawachi Saigoku Pilgrimage. The ossuary on the temple grounds also accepts permanent memorial services for all denominations.
