Kuboso Memorial Museum of Arts

The Izumi City Kuboso Memorial Museum of Art is home to a spectacular collection of Eastern and Western art that is admired around the world.
This museum has a first-class collection, including national treasure celadon porcelain, ink paintings by Miyamoto Musashi, and Monet's water lilies.
The Izumi City Kuboso Memorial Museum of Art is an art museum run by the city of Izumi that opened in 1982. It houses approximately 12,000 pieces of ancient Oriental art, including Japanese and Chinese paintings, calligraphy, and crafts, including two national treasures and 29 important cultural properties, and holds four to five planned exhibitions per year that make use of the collection, as well as one original special exhibition per year.
In addition to exhibitions, the museum also provides opportunities and venues for citizens to engage in creative activities and present their work, such as tea ceremonies, concerts, and citizen exhibitions, thereby promoting the city's culture.
Kuboso (Kuboso Co., Ltd.) has been in the cotton industry for approximately 100 years since the Meiji era, and has grown significantly as one of the leading companies in Senshu.
The company was founded in 1886 by the first generation Kubo Sotaro (1863-1928), and was passed down to the second generation Kubo Sotaro (1889-1944), Kubo Tadakiyo (1900-1954), and the third generation Kubo Sotaro (1926-1984), who made a significant contribution to the development of the local city of Izumi.
When the company went out of business in 1977, Sotaro Kubo, representing the three companies, donated the art pieces collected by successive company representatives, as well as the museum building, grounds, and funds, to Izumi City, with the intention of contributing to the development of local culture in Izumi, a place with a deep connection to the company, and expressing gratitude to the local community. In October 1982, the Izumi City Kuboso Memorial Museum was opened on the site of the former Kubo family residence, named in honour of the donor.
The museum has six exhibition rooms, displaying paintings from the Kamakura to Edo periods, ukiyo-e prints from the Edo period, ancient Chinese bronzeware, Western paintings, and more, with rotating exhibits. There is also a lush garden on the premises, where you can relax and enjoy art.
