Shippozan Daifuku-in Temple Mitsudera Temple

This ancient temple was founded by Gyoki in 744 and is an esoteric Buddhist temple where many ancient Buddha statues remain.
Mount Shippo was founded in 744 (Tenpyo 16) by imperial order of Emperor Shomu as the burial site of Emperor Ojin. The main hall, where the Eleven-Headed Kannon Bodhisattva is enshrined, was constructed by Gyoki Bodhisattva in accordance with the imperial command of Emperor Shomu. The current main hall, which survived the fires of the Osaka air raids during World War II, was rebuilt in 1808 (Bunka 5) at the end of the Tokugawa period. Decorated with lacquer, gold leaf, and flower petal designs, the principal image of the Eleven-Headed Kannon Bodhisattva stands in the center, flanked by eight other Buddha statues, including Yakushi Nyorai and Kobo Daishi. Also located about a 10-minute walk southeast of Mitsudera, in Sennichimae, is Shorin-an (Mitsudera Sennichimae Cemetery), where many gravestones of prominent Senba merchants and Kamigata entertainers are enshrined, including memorial towers for Yasui Doton, Sankatsu, and Hanshichi.
