Mount Inunaki

Mount Inunaki is a sacred site for Shugendo, and was opened six years earlier than Mount Omine in Yamato. Even today, leading ascetics from around the country gather here to practice, and you can see ascetics being splashed by the waterfall at Gyoja Falls. Mount Inunaki in particular is also known as Women's Omine, and many female ascetics practice here.
Located in Izumisano City, Mount Inunaki is known for its hot spring resort and Inunaki Shippōryū-ji Temple, Japan's oldest Shugendo training center, founded by En no Gyoja approximately 1,300 years ago. The mountain is known as the "Twenty-Eight Stations within the Mountain," and features major training sites, waterfalls, rock formations, halls, and shrines, allowing many people to experience the area. Mount Inunaki is also known as "Women's Omine," a famous training site for women. The name Mount Inunaki is said to have come from a story from the reign of Emperor Uda (887-897), when a hunter was targeted by a giant snake in the mountains, and his beloved dog barked loudly and risked his life to protect him. The grave of the famous dog, Giken, stands along the path to Mount Inunaki Shippōryū-ji Temple. In addition, in the hot spring town along the mountain stream at the foot of Mt. Inunaki, you can soothe your mind and body in an open-air hot spring while experiencing the charms of each season: mountain cherry blossoms in spring, fireflies and Kajika frogs (named after their cry that resembles that of a stag) in summer, autumn leaves in autumn, and fluttering snow in winter.
