It is said that Empress Jingu vowed to remain here for tens of thousands of years to come and protect the peace and prosperity of the world and all its citizens. During the reign of Emperor Kinmei (537-571), this place was named Mozu and a shrine was built here to enshrine Empress Jingu. In its heyday, the shrine is said to have had 48 temples, 360 priests, and 800 hectares of land. In 1158 (the third year of the Hogen era) during the reign of Emperor Goshirakawa, it became a branch shrine of Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine, attracting worshippers from the powerful Kyushu clan of the Ouchi clan, who ruled Izumi Province, as well as the common people and nobles. However, most of the buildings were destroyed by fire during the Summer Siege of Osaka and other disasters. The shrine boasts a 300-year tradition of the Moon Viewing Festival, held on the harvest moon of the mid-autumn moon. The sight of the nine parishioners, large and small, performing futon taiko drums accompanied by spirited shouts of "Beera beera bera shoshoi," is truly magnificent and heroic. Also on the shrine grounds is a large camphor tree, approximately 800 years old, designated as a prefectural natural monument. [Status for 2024] The Mozu Hachiman Shrine Autumn Festival (Moon Viewing Festival) will be held on September 21st (Sat) and 22nd (Sun).
