This museum, dedicated to ancient tombs, has the main theme of "Exploring the formation of Japan's ancient nation and international exchange." It was designed to offer a panoramic view of the entire Chikatsu Asuka Fudoki Hill, and the exhibition rooms are in the shape of keyhole-shaped tumuli, creating a sense of unity between the exhibition rooms and the exhibits (designed by Tadao Ando). The exhibits are divided into three zones: Chikatsu Asuka and International Exchange, the Origins of the Ancient Nation, and Modern Science and Cultural Heritage. The Chikatsu Asuka and International Exchange Zone displays numerous swords, blades, metal fittings, earrings, and rings excavated from the Ichisuka Tomb Group from the Kofun period to the Asuka period (4th to 7th centuries). The Origins of the Ancient Nation Zone features full-scale reproductions of pit-style and horizontal-style stone chambers, explaining how the tombs were constructed and their interiors. There's also a replica of the Emperor Nintoku's Mausoleum, resembling the original form it was when it was built. The final zone, "Modern Science and Cultural Heritage," explains the various techniques used in excavating cultural heritage, including the Shura and lever excavated from the Mitsuzuka Tomb in the Furuichi Tomb Group in 1978, as well as the investigation of underwater ruins, ground-penetrating radar surveys, and X-ray photography. The museum also regularly organizes tours of surrounding cultural properties, guided and explained by curators, and is apparently working to deepen the connection between the outdoor cultural heritage and the museum. It also hosts courses, lectures, and various events.
