Sakai City Tea Houses Shinan and Obaian

Enjoy a cup of tea in the hometown of the tea master, Sen no Rikyu.
Relax in the sukiya-style tea room designed by the Meiji era master craftsman, Ogi Rodo.
Sen no Rikyu, who perfected wabi-cha tea, was born in 1522 as the eldest son of a wealthy fishmonger (Totoya) in Sakai.
Sakai is home to many places associated with Rikyu, including the remains of his residence, and if you would like to enjoy a cup of tea while remembering this great man of tea ceremony, head to Sakai City Tea House "Shinan."
Located in a corner of the lush Daisen Park adjacent to the Emperor Nintoku Tomb (Daisen Kofun), the sukiya-style teahouse was built in 1929 and was designed by Ogi Rodo, a master of sukiya-style construction from the Taisho to Showa periods.
The elegant building is partially two-story and has a standing seating area for 15 people, making it possible to hold tea ceremonies for large groups.
Along with the neighboring Oubai-an, it is a registered tangible cultural property of the country.
The garden that connects the two teahouses is free to visit and is also home to the former Jodo-ji nine-story pagoda, a nationally designated important cultural property.
