Matsushima Zuiganji Temple and more
One of Japan’s Three Most Scenic Views, Matsushima is a celebrated beauty spot that appears at the very beginning of Matsuo Basho’s travelogue, "The Narrow Road to the Deep North" ("Oku no Hosomichi"). The breathtaking scenery comes from the many islands of varying sizes, including Niojima, Senganjima, Komonejima, and Kanejima. The area is also closely associated with Date Masamune, the first lord of the Sendai Domain. There are many places where you can feel the region’s history, such as Zuiganji Temple, which Masamune rebuilt over five years, and Godaido Hall. Don't forget to enjoy the fresh local seafood, too!

Matsushima Pleasure Cruise
Marubun Matsushima Kisen
A pleasure cruise that lets you enjoy the islands up close, offering a very different perspective from viewing them on land. You can visit distinctive islands such as Nioujima, the symbol of Matsushima known for its striking shape formed by wave erosion, as well as Yoroijima and Kabutojima, which resemble a samurai’s armor and helmet. Onboard commentary also shares legends and stories connected to the islands. Limited-time cruises are available as well, including a nighttime illumination cruise and an oyster hot pot cruise.

Sendai Kaleidoscope Museum
An art museum specializing in kaleidoscopes. It displays a wide range of works, from rare antique pieces found only in a handful of places worldwide to creations by contemporary artists. Some exhibits are especially unique, such as one that reflects your face endlessly when you put your head inside. Certain works can be photographed, so you can capture an incredible, one-of-a-kind shot.
30 minutes by car
Togatta Onsen
Daikon-no-Hana
A luxurious inn with only 12 villas and 18 guestrooms set within a natural forest spanning 10,000 tsubo (about 33,000m2). Surrounded by an overwhelming abundance of nature, your time here will help release your mind and body from the tension caused by the rush of everyday life. The hot springs are free-flowing from the property’s own source. In addition to a large semi-open-air bath, there are four complimentary private open-air baths that do not require reservations, making hot spring hopping part of the fun. Another highlight is the “lava bath stone spa,” inspired by bedrock bathing and lined with lava stones from the foothills of Mt. Zao.
