October 16, 2017: Visit to Sakai Cutlery Scissor Blacksmith (Sasuke) / Sakai City
Located in Sakai City, famous for its Sakai cutlery, Sasuke is a scissors blacksmith that has been making kitchen knives and scissors since the end of the Edo period, utilizing gun manufacturing techniques. Fifth-generation head of the family, Yasuhiro Hirakawa, held a solo exhibition at Atelier Oishi in France (Versailles) in 2002, was certified as a Sakai City Monozukuri Meister (scissors production), received the Osaka Headquarters Director's Award from the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) at the Osaka Crafts Exhibition, and received the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman's Award at the Osaka Crafts Exhibition in 2003. Forged blades such as scissors and kitchen knives are made by combining hard steel and soft metal, which gives them excellent sharpness and durability.
