Abikosan Taisho Kannonji Temple (Abiko Kannon Temple)

This ancient temple venerates a statue of the deity Kannon sent by the king of the ancient Korean kingdom of Paekche. Numerous people visit the temple every Setsubun holiday to pray for protection from misfortune and positive luck.
Commonly called Abiko Kannon Temple, this is also the oldest temple to the bodhisattva Kannon in Japan. This area was once home to the clan of Yosami no Abiko, which received the central Kannon statue from the king of Paekche in modern-day Korea and established the temple in 546. Afterwards, tales hold that Prince Shotoku accepted the teachings of Kannon and proceeded to build Abikosan Kannonji Temple. The temple was once so prosperous that it contained 36 auxiliary temples on its premises, but these were lost along with numerous relics in a fire in 1881. Subsequently, the temple was rebuilt in 1890. The temple conducts a "Setsubun Yaku-yoke Daihokai" festival on February 3rd of every year, and the grounds grow lively with believers praying for protection from misfortune, good luck, good health, and successful careers.
