Located in the south of Tennoji. In the Heian period, when the Kumano pilgrimage was extremely popular, Abe Oji Shrine was designated as the fourth of the Kumano Kuju-ku (ninety-nine) Oji shrines. (The order has been changed with the times and the current Oji is a second Oji.)  Oji refers to sub-shrines of Kumano Taisha Grand Shrine. Oji shrines were built along the Kumano pilgrimage route from Kyoto to serve as places for rest and prayer. Abe Oji Shrine is said to have been founded by the 16th emperor of Japan. Historical records also state that, when a great plague broke out in 826, the 53rd emperor of Japan ordered Kobo Daishi, a revered monk, to offer prayers to the gods at Abe Oji Shrine in the hope of putting an end to the epidemic. Praying at Abe Oji is said to aid in warding off evil, preserving sound health, and curing diseases. Abeno Seimei Shrine is a sub-shrine of Abe Oji Shrine. On the grounds of the shrine are five camphor trees and one Japanese hackberry tree designated as protected trees by Osaka Prefecture.
