Located south of Tennoji Temple, this shrine was known as the fourth of the 99 Kumano Oji Shrines during the Heian period, when pilgrimages to Kumano were popular (though the order has changed over time, with the current shrine being the second Oji). "Oji" refers to a branch shrine of Kumano Taisha Shrine in Wakayama Prefecture, and refers to a shrine established for rest and worship along the road from Kyoto to Kumano via Settsu and Izumi. It is said to have originally been founded by Emperor Nintoku. Records also remain of Kobo Daishi offering prayers for the elimination of epidemics at the imperial command of Emperor Junna in 826, and the shrine is revered for its benefits of warding off evil, preventing illness, and healing from illness. Abe no Seimei Shrine is a branch shrine, and within its grounds are five camphor trees and one Japanese elm, designated as Osaka Prefecture's designated preserved trees.
