Atago Shrine

He has been worshipped as the god of fire since ancient times.
Atago Shrine has long been worshipped as the god of fire. It is said that Ikeda's Atago Shrine began when people saw a fire lit at the summit of Satsukiyama and gathered together, shouting, "Atago-san has come to Ikeda!" At that time, people's houses were made of wood and had almost no fire prevention equipment, so fires were a major disaster. It seems that people's faith in the god of fire was such that he would protect them from the disasters of fire. The Gangara Fire Festival, held every year on August 24th, is a time-honored festival that has continued since the Edo period. Young people carry two large torches weighing about 100 kg and light the characters "Daiichi" and "Dai" on the mountainside as they descend the mountain. Afterwards, they arrange the torches in the shape of a person and parade through town. It has been designated an intangible cultural property of Osaka Prefecture. *The photo shows the Gangara Fire Festival
