It is believed this shrine was built by order of the emperor in 90 B.C. Built on the border of three ancient provinces, it was an important transportation hub in the Nara period. During the Heian period, pilgrims on their way to Kumano were sure to stop here and pray for safety on their journey. As an unspoiled land that was not under the jurisdiction of any government, it's long been believed that the soil and sand here have the power to purify one of jinxes. The shrine is still popular today with people who wish to ward off evil when building a new house or moving. Many worshippers are drawn to the shrine for the custom of "katatagai," which dictates that if the direction in which one is heading is unlucky, one should face another direction before turning back to head towards one's initial goal. Chimaki Matsuri is held annually on May 31st. During the festival, chimaki, a kind of cake, is wrapped in a woven straw mat and given out to parishioners.
