Kurohigeyama Tumulus

Dating back to Japan’s antiquity, this historic site has been beautifully recreated.

Measuring 114 meters in total length, Kurohigeyama Tumulus is 64 meters wide and 11 meters tall at its “triangle” portion. Believed to date back to the middle of the Kofun period (3rd to 7th century AD), the tomb was even used as a fortification during Japan’s middle ages (late 12th to late 16th century). The area around the tomb’s moat was constructed as a shutei-tai (a “protective perimeter” intended for aesthetic purposes), demonstrating the dedication the people of ancient Japan had to beauty and aesthetics. The guidance center here has an exhibit of armor and haniwa (terracotta figurines) unearthed during excavations of Kurohigeyama Tumulus.
