This museum collects, preserves, and exhibits materials related to the history, art, archaeology, and folklore of Sakai City. It was built in Daisen Park in 1980 to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the city's founding.
Sakai City, home to the World Heritage Site "Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group," including the Emperor Nintoku Tomb, flourished in the Middle Ages as an autonomous city and trading city run by influential merchants known as "kaigaishu." During the Edo period, cutting tools began to be manufactured here, making full use of techniques cultivated through ancient traditions, and these manufacturing techniques are still used today in bicycle manufacturing and other applications.
The Sakai City Museum's permanent exhibition features artifacts excavated from the Kofun period and matchlock guns, many of which were manufactured in Sakai, allowing visitors to experience Sakai's long history. Pottery and Sue ware from the Kofun period, as well as the standing statue of Kannon Bodhisattva, are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan and are a must-see (though they may not be on display due to exhibit changes). You can also enjoy the Kofun Theater, which makes full use of CG, free of charge.
