The Nakanoshima and Kitahama area is lined with a number of retro modern buildings. The history of Osaka's modernization, stretching from the Meiji to the Taisho and Showa periods, is alive here, and many interesting anecdotes remain. Take a time trip back in time to the "City of Commerce" and "City of Water."

When it was completed in the early Showa period, it was praised as the most modern and beautiful building in Osaka, and even now in the 21st century, it is still considered one of the finest examples of modern Art Deco architecture.

The building's calming brown exterior shows the influence of American Beaux-Arts. It was formerly the Osaka branch of the Hotoku Bank during the Taisho era. It has now been reborn as the patisserie "Gokan Kitahama Main Building," and a sweet aroma always wafts from the retro interior.

The cylindrical entrance hall is a symbol of Kitahama. The facade, which references the structure of classical architecture on its smooth walls, and the Art Deco decorations are also impressive.

Hanagairo
This restaurant was the venue for the "Osaka Conference" when the heroes of the Meiji Restoration gathered in Osaka. As a result, the foundation of Japan's constitutional government was laid. Founded in 1830, it has undergone several transformations since then before taking on its current appearance. A monument commemorating the Osaka Conference remains in front of the restaurant.

The building is based on the Neo-Renaissance style, but has a Baroque grandeur. The ceiling and murals in the special room, painted by Matsuoka Hisashi, are a highlight of the building, taking advantage of the arched roof.

Tekijuku (nationally designated important cultural property)
This school for Dutch studies was opened by the doctor and Dutch scholar Ogata Koan, and is said to be the origin of Osaka University. Housed in a two-story townhouse from the Edo period, it exhibits valuable materials related to medicine and Dutch studies.

Yodoyabashi Center Building
On the first floor of this building, which was built at the end of the 20th century, is Shinso, a restaurant established in 1781 (the first year of the Tenmei era) that offers a wide selection of Kamigata (Kyoto) flavors, including salted kelp. The interior of the restaurant recreates the townscape from when the restaurant first opened.
