Itsukushima's auxiliary shrine, Kasuga Shrine, stands on the right side of the main shrine. The original Itsukushima Shrine was dismantled and reconstructed here when it was inherited from Nara's Kasuga Taisha Grand Shrine during the Meiji Revolution. The structure's age is unknown. Based on the architectural style, it is thought to be from the Muromachi period. Because of the shrine's proximity to Kyoto, its regional characteristics are slightly different from other southern Osaka shrines. The inner sanctuary of Kasuga Shrine was designated an important national cultural property in 1978.
